Willie the Woolly Mammoth, the main character inThe Story of Big Bone Lick, is our mascot because he embodies a kind spirit and warm heart. He, of course, is a mammoth and an extinct part of the elephant family.
Elephants are mammals like us and they live in a matriarchal society meaning they are governed by a female. The male elephants are pushed out of the herd to live a solitary life at about the age of 14. The oldest female will lead the herd until her death which is sometimes as old as 72 years.
